Not All Plumbers Are the Same
When a pipe bursts at 10 PM or your water heater dies on a Sunday morning, you are going to grab your phone and search for "plumber near me." You will get a long list of results. Some are solid local companies. Some are national call centers that dispatch whoever is available. A few are unlicensed handymen hoping you will not ask questions.
Choosing the wrong plumber costs more than the repair itself. Bad work creates new problems. Here is how to sort the good from the bad before you hand someone the keys to your home.
Check for a License First
Texas requires plumbers to be licensed through the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE). A Journeyman Plumber has passed the state exam and can do the work. A Responsible Master Plumber has passed a more advanced exam and can pull permits and take legal responsibility for the work done under their license.
If someone cannot give you a license number, walk away. An unlicensed plumber cannot pull permits, which means your city has no record of the work. You can verify any plumber's license on the TSBPE website in about two minutes.
Insurance Matters Just as Much
A licensed plumber should carry both general liability insurance and workers' compensation. If an uninsured plumber damages your property or gets injured on your job, you could be the one paying for it. Ask to see proof of insurance before any work starts.
Why the Cheapest Quote Usually Costs More
This is the trap most Dallas homeowners fall into. You get three quotes. Two are in the same range. One is significantly cheaper. The cheap quote wins because it feels like a deal.
Here is what typically happens next. The low bidder shows up and "discovers" additional problems. The price climbs. Or they cut corners, using lower quality parts or skipping steps that matter. Six months later, you are calling someone else to redo the work. You end up paying twice.
A fair quote from a licensed, insured plumber reflects the actual cost of doing the job right. If a quote seems too good to be true, it is.
Read Reviews, But Read Them Right
Online reviews are useful, but you need to read them with some common sense. Look for patterns, not individual complaints. Every business gets a bad review eventually. What you want to see is consistent feedback about showing up on time, explaining the problem clearly, and charging what was quoted.
Pay attention to how the company responds to negative reviews. A business that takes the time to address a complaint publicly cares about its reputation. One that ignores complaints or gets defensive is telling you something about how they will handle your job.
Questions to Ask Before You Hire
Are you licensed and insured? Ask for the license number and verify it.
Will you provide a written estimate after inspecting the problem? A plumber who gives you a firm price over the phone without seeing the job is guessing, or giving you a low number to get in the door.
What is your warranty on parts and labor? Reputable companies stand behind their work. No warranty is a red flag.
Who will actually be doing the work? Some companies send apprentices or subcontractors. Know who is showing up at your house.
Do you charge a diagnostic fee? This is normal and fair. A plumber who offers free estimates is building that cost into the repair price somewhere.
Master Plumber vs. Journeyman
A Journeyman Plumber in Texas has completed the required training hours and passed the state exam. They are qualified to do plumbing work under the supervision of a Master Plumber.
A Responsible Master Plumber has logged more experience, passed a harder exam, and holds the authority to supervise other plumbers, pull permits, and take legal responsibility for the work. When a Master Plumber puts their license on a job, they are personally accountable for the quality.
This does not mean a Journeyman will do bad work. It means a Master Plumber has more at stake and more experience behind their decisions.
Hire Local, Hire Right
A local Dallas plumber has a reputation in the community. They depend on referrals and repeat business. That gives them every reason to treat you well and do the job right.
Cole's Plumbing is based right here in the DFW metroplex, serving Dallas, Carrollton, The Colony, and surrounding cities. Owner Chad Cole holds a Responsible Master Plumber License (RMP-40414) from the state of Texas. Every job is done under that license.
